Dendroecology is the study of tree rings to study ecological processes.  For example, this might include an examination of the number of release events found in the tree rings indicating how often canopy gaps were formed in the stand, or perhaps an examination of the relationship between acid precipitation over the last 25 years and tree-ring responses.
