Nursery Manager

Upon graduation from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental and Plant Biology, Megan joined the staff at Millcreek Gardens LLC, a wholesale grower of perennials, herbs, and ornamental grasses located in Ostrander, Ohio, north of Columbus. Her initial responsibilities as the IMPACT Department Production Supervisor included all facets of plant production. (IMPACT is Millcreek's trade name for the one-gallon containers used in this
department). Responsibilities ranged from receiving, unloading, and unpacking plant materials as they arrived from suppliers to working directly with the department manager to coordinate the timing of production and potting of perennials. As the crew leader she was responsible for other crew members at all stages, including root pruning and plant preparation, potting, unloading in proper greenhouse locations and watering each day's production.

She was promoted to Co-Manager of the IMPACT Department in 2001, and she now shares the responsibility for the daily operation and oversight of the department. Her duties begin with securing plant material from outside sources as well as Millcreek's Propagation Department. She then works directly with the Production Supervisor to coordinate crop scheduling and plant production. She is also responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of plants in the IMPACT Department, including moving, spacing, pruning, watering and fertilizing plants.

When all is said and done, the most important part of growing the plants is to ship them to the customer. Megan and her co-manager use a computer program to generate customer 'pull sheets', from which the plants for each order will be selected and pulled from the greenhouses. From this point the plants are run through the Shipping Department for final cleaning, inspection, and loading onto the trucks. Millcreek Gardens delivers to a 5-state area within a 250-mile radius of Columbus.

While having a green thumb is a very important part of being a perennial grower - it's not the only thing you will need! The green industry relies heavily on computers in this age of technology. Megan's computer responsibilities include generating a weekly list of available plants, which is faxed or e-mailed to customers. Also, she produces the Millcreek Gardens printed catalogue, which is mailed to customers each November. And most recently Megan designed the Millcreek Gardens website.
