Research Program Summary Restoration Ecology is an applied science which focuses on developing and implementing the tools and practices necessary to help rehabilitate impaired ecosystems and return them to a level of greater ecological function. The original landscape that encompasses the Wilds has undergone extensive alterations through agriculture, surface mining for coal, and subsequent reclamation. I am interested in understanding how the nearly 10,000 acres of land has been recovering from the disturbance and how it can be enhanced to support maximum biodiversity. Recent Restoration Ecology research projects at the Wilds have included: establishing large-scale habitats for pollinator populations, introducing large tracts of grasslands and native plant communities, American Elm tree trials, forest remnant ecology, enhancing wetland structure and diversity, managing and enhancing endangered grassland bird habitat, and best management practices for invasive non-native plants.
