Applications for the PhD and MS program are considered throughout the academic year but funding is often not available out of cycle. If you want to be considered for both admission and funding for the next academic year, submit all materials by January 15.

 

Requirements:

  • background in the natural sciences (with significant biology emphasis)

  • course work in the physical sciences (physics, chemistry, math, related disciplines) recommended

  • GPA of 3.0 or better

  • GRE general test within the last 4 years and percentile scores of 50% or better preferred

International Students:

 

If you are an international student whose native language is not English, submit scores from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the English Test of the University of Michigan English Language Institute. Your minimum TOEFL score should be 620 (written), 260 (computer), or 105 (internet).

Suggestions for Completing the online Graduate Admissions Application Form:

To answer the question, "What will be your graduate major/degree?" Under the Bold "Biological Sciences", please choose one of three options:

1.    Environmental & Plant Biology PhD
2.    Environmental & Plant Biology MS
3.    MCB/Biology-Environmental & Plant Biology PhD

Please read instructions carefully and fill out the application completely, including sections on prior experiences.

Make sure to follow the directions on the "US/Permanent Resident Graduate Application Checklist" or "International Graduate Checklist" for additional materials that should be submitted.

On Form 3, "Background Information and References", under "Professional or vocational plans", please list faculty in our department with whom you'd like to do research.

Besides the application form, our department requires:

  • a personal statement

    • keep 1-2 pages in length

    • describe previous research experience

    • list goals for graduate school

    • discuss career plans after graduate school

    • indicate the faculty member(s) with whom
      you'd like to do research

  • resume

  • transcripts

  • GRE test scores

  • 3 letters of recommendation
